Diploma of Spanish as a Foreign Language (DELE)

The Instituto Cervantes, in the name of the Spanish Ministry of Education, Culture and Sports, awards the Diplomas of Spanish as a Foreign Language (DELE). These are official qualifications of proficiency levels in the Spanish language.

The Universidad Antonio de Nebrija has been an official examination center since the exams were first held. Exams can be taken at the Universidad Antonio de Nebrija in beginner, intermediate or high levels in May and November. There are six levels available: A1, A2, B1 (Initial), B2 (Intermediate), C1, C2.

Diplomas of Spanish as a Foreign Language (DELE): Spanish as a second language, the Instituto Cervantes Spanish language exams, Spanish language certificate and the DELE exams.

Levels and Certificates:



The Diploma de Español Nivel A1 certifies the sufficient linguistic competence to understand and use everyday expressions frequently used in any part of the Spanish-speaking world, aimed at satisfying immediate needs.



The Diploma de Español Nivel A2 certifies understanding of everyday phrases and expressions frequently used in areas that are particularly relevant (personal information, occupation, shopping, places of interest, etc.).



The Diploma de Español Nivel B1 (Initial) certifies the sufficient linguistic competence to understand and respond adequately to everyday situations and to communicate desires, needs, plans and opinions.  


The Diploma de Español Nivel B2 (Intermediate) certifies the sufficient linguistic competence to cope with everyday situations that do not require specialized terms, and engage fluently in everyday situations.

The Diploma de Español Nivel C1 certifies the sufficient linguistic proficiency to express fluently and spontaneously with clarity, in an organized and coherent way, any matter related to social, academic and professional issues. It certifies a wide lexicon, including colloquial and idiomatic expressions.

The Diploma de Español Nivel C2 certifies the necessary linguistic proficiency to function affectively in any communicative situation, including those that require an advanced use of language and deep knowledge of the culture it represents, showing a spontaneous adaptation to any context and with a high degree of precision and control of subtleties.
